2017Minnesota workers’ comp rates: maximum, minimum & SAWW

For Minnesota work injuries on or after October 1, 2016, the maximum weekly workers' compensation benefit is $1,046.52 and the minimum is $130.00, based on a statewide average weekly wage (SAWW) of $1,026.00. On October 1, 2017, the maximum changed to $1,061.82 for new injuries.

What these numbers mean

Most Minnesota wage-loss benefits (TTD, TPD, PTD) pay two-thirds of the worker’s average weekly wage, capped at the maximum for the date of injury. With a maximum of $1,046.52, the cap is reached at an average weekly wage of about $1,569.78 (because $1,569.78 × 2/3 = $1,046.52). Anyone earning more than that gets the same capped rate.

The rate in effect on the date of injury applies for the life of the claim. A later October increase does not raise an existing claim’s cap; instead, benefits on older claims grow through the annual adjustment under Minn. Stat. § 176.645.
