Editorial Policy

MN Comp Buddy is a free educational resource for Minnesota injured workers. Because the tools and guides on this site involve legal rights and financial benefits(what Google calls “Your Money or Your Life” topics), we hold ourselves to a high standard of accuracy and transparency.

Who writes the content

The calculator logic, education articles, and glossary entries are written and maintained by Daniel Swenson, a Minnesota workers' compensation attorney. There is not a separate editorial team or an independent legal reviewer behind that byline. Automated tests check formulas and data consistency, but they do not substitute for outside legal review. MN Comp Buddyis an educational tool site created by a Minnesota workers' compensation attorney. It is not a law firm's primary website.

Editorial standards

  • Statute and rule citations: Every calculator and benefit explanation is traceable to a specific Minnesota statute (Minn. Stat. ch. 176) or administrative rule (Minn. R. ch. 5223). We do not rely on private secondary treatises for public-facing content.
  • PPD data verification: All permanent partial disability (PPD) schedule data is verified against the official text published by the Minnesota Office of the Revisor of Statutes at revisor.mn.gov/rules/5223/full.
  • No unsourced claims:If a legal statement cannot be tied to a statute, rule, or published DLI/WCRA guidance document, it is either cited as the author's opinion or omitted.
  • Calculations are testable: Calculator outputs are checked against known results. The underlying formulas are open for inspection in our sources page.

Update schedule

  • Compensation rates:Minnesota workers' compensation maximum and minimum weekly rates are updated by the Department of Labor and Industry every October 1. We publish updated rates as soon as they are announced.
  • Education articles: Articles are reviewed when the underlying law changes (e.g., a legislative session amends ch. 176) or when we identify a common misunderstanding worth addressing.
  • QRC directory: The directory is rebuilt from the published DLI and UCWCP lists periodically. Snapshot dates are shown on each directory page.

How we handle corrections

If you find an error, whether it is a wrong rate, a broken citation, a typo, or a statement that does not match the statute, please let us know. We take accuracy seriously and will correct confirmed errors promptly.

When a correction is made, the “Last updated” date on the affected page is revised. Material corrections to calculators are noted in the tool's description.

Transparency and limitations

This site is not the firm's primary website. The tools and articles are general information, not legal advice tailored to any individual case, and using them does not create an attorney-client relationship. Every workers' compensation claim is different. If you need advice about your situation, talk to a licensed Minnesota workers' compensation attorney.

The site does carry attorney advertising. A named Minnesota workers' compensation attorney is identified in the footer and in the call-to-action blocks on tool and article pages, and contacting that attorney is one of the actions this site is built to produce. Read the educational material with that in mind. If you would rather not talk to a lawyer, the DLI Office of the Workers' Compensation Ombudsman is a free state service for unrepresented workers, and LawHelpMN lists Minnesota legal aid programs.
